Topic: WILD SWANS THREE DAUGHTERS OF CHINA BY JUNG CHANG
Paper details:
In our discussions of Chinese civilization we discussed three important virtues that Confucian tradition emphasized: ren (diligence and hard work), li (propriety) and xiao (filial piety).
In 20th century China as depicted in Wild Swans, we see great efforts to modernize and, at times, to put aside the Confucian virtues. They were seen as impediments to modernization and creation of a new society based on reason and technology.
In Wild Swans you will see that those virtues are sometimes under siege, but sometimes still seem very durable and long lasting.
For your essay discuss 4 scenes in the book where at least one of these virtues are called into question and yet still remain durable. Two of the scenes should be related to the pre-Peoples Republic era (before 1949) and two of the scenes should be related to the era of the Peoples Republic (after 1949). Introduce the characters, describe the scenes and indicate how the conflict over the virtues plays out. You need not treat all of the three virtues. Please indicate the page numbers of the scenes in Wild Swans with proper citations. You should only use Wild Swans as your source for this essay.
