Drawing upon the particularities of an observed performance event of your
choosing, use TWO perspectives from the Spring Term to answer ONE of the
following questions:
1) To what extent did this performance transform participants and/or maintain the
status quo of society?
2) How did this performance speak to the past and to the present?
3) How did your own presence affect the performance event you witnessed, as well
as the performance of other participants?
You can choose your own performance event to analyse in the essay, but it must be
witnessed first hand and specifically for the purposes of this assessment.
Previous examples have included:
Church services
Weddings
Court Proceedings
Musical concerts
Professional sports events
Your essay might also engage with the following points to discuss the specificity of
the event you are writing about:
• History – How is the performance a product of, or a reaction against,
tradition?
• Context – What are the social, political, economic and cultural contexts of
the performance event you are witnessing?
• Theory – How can theoretical perspectives from the course enable you to
decode the symbolic significance of the performance event you see?
